Do not choose by the technology label alone
A field may seem interesting because it brings together new developments. The choice becomes more concrete when you identify a task. Do you want to build a mechanism, investigate data, design an interaction or understand someone’s needs? The three directions in this guide are examples for research. Artificial intelligence: investigate the limits as well

As an exercise, choose a public example, record its purpose and identify a situation in which its response might fail. Use public or fictional data and do not submit other people’s personal information for the experiment.
Assistive technology: begin with the person’s activity
WHO describes assistive technology as products and services that help maintain or improve functioning and independence. To explore the subject, begin with a barrier in an everyday activity, without assuming what another person needs. Research existing resources, observe accessibility principles and seek appropriate training. Do not test health or mobility solutions on people without suitable competence and supervision.
Compare what you would like to do in a working week
Make a table with four rows: a problem that interests you, a task you want to try, knowledge to acquire and a source still needed. You might discover an interest at an intersection: device software, accessible design or signal analysis. Look for courses and professionals through these concrete activities. Courses with the same name can emphasize different things; read the curriculum and verify local availability.
